A carpet stair runner is typically installed on hardwood stairs and does not cover the entire width of the stair. It is bound on both sides to prevent fraying and carpet stair runners come in virtually all colors and patterns and can be cut and bound in different widths, depending on how much hardwood you want showing on each side.

Purpose of a Carpet Runner

There are many reasons homeowners add carpet stair runners over hardwood. One of the most common reasons is for safety. Hardwood stairs can be very slippery, which can present a danger, especially for children, pets or the elderly. Adding a stair runner over the hardwood stairs reduces the danger by providing traction, and a safe place to walk on the stairs. In addition, it also adds comfort. Carpet stair runners also reduce noise. Carpet absorbs sound much more than hard surfaces do, so adding a carpet stair runner will make trips up and down the stairs much quieter. A carpet runner also adds style. A hardwood staircase with a beautiful carpet stair runner creates a focal point in your home but be sure to select the proper runner. Homeowners have two options when shopping for stair runners:

1. Pre-Made Runners – These can be purchased in most box stores and give homeowners very little choice in pattern or width.
2. Custom-Made Runners – Flowers Flooring has thousands of carpets to select from for custom-made runners. We provide binding and installation service as well. During your free in-home estimate, our estimate technician will recommend patterns and widths that work well with your décor and color scheme.

Carpet Runner Width

Customers always ask our installers “How wide should the carpet runner be?” The answer to this question completely depends on the width of the staircase in your home. For stairs that are approximately 3 feet wide, Flowers Flooring suggests a 27-inch carpet runner. This width allows a good coverage of the hardwood and doesn’t make it feel like you are walking on a narrow strip, yet it’s not too wide to overpower the entire stair and leaves enough hardwood exposed on each side. For wider stairs that are 4 or 5 feet, Flowers Flooring recommends a 33-inch runner. If you have a staircase that falls outside the standard sizes listed above, a Flowers Flooring estimator will recommend the appropriate size during your free in-home estimate.

Patterned Carpet Runner

A patterned carpet runner can be a stunning choice. There are thousands to select from, so be sure the pattern will work on your stairs. Some patterned stair runners are more effective on long, flat surfaces, such as a runner in a hallway and do not look as nice on a stairway. If you have your heart set on a patterned design, Flowers Flooring recommends using a small pattern. Large patterns will get lost and will look uneven, as the pattern is bent over each stair. A small pattern will nicely showcase the design of each stair tread and riser.

Carpet Runner Padding

Just like the carpet throughout your home, a carpet runner needs a pad under it. The best carpet cushion for under a stair runner is a thin pad so that it does not raise the height of the runner by much. The pad should also be dense, to properly support the runner so that it doesn’t flex to much when walked on.

Stair runners are a great addition to your hardwood staircase for safety, style and comfort. Call Flowers Flooring (704) 445-7750 today to get started on your carpet runner project. Carpet tile is gaining in popularity in both homes and businesses due to the fact that it’s easy to install, easy to clean and easy to replace. Carpet tiles are also extremely durable and versatile, and make great flooring options for businesses, kids playrooms, family rooms and basements. Carpet tiles are squares of carpet that fit together and come in various sizes including 12×12, 18×18 and 24×24 inches.

Unlike rolled wall-to-wall carpet, carpet tiles are cut into smaller square sizes, which make installing and replacing stained carpet tiles easy. If an area of carpet tile gets soiled and needs replaced, you will simply need to remove those specific carpet tiles and have new carpet tiles installed. You don’t need to replace the entire room of carpet.

As an added bonus, carpet tiles are easy to clean; you simply vacuum as you would with any carpet. Carpet tiles are usually low pile so they trap less dirt and debris. When your flooring professional orders your carpet tile, be sure they order extra, so that you have the extras on hand in the event you need to replace one.

Carpet tiles require less of a waste factor than wall-to-wall carpet, which will bring your material costs down. Utilizing carpet tiles also avoids awkward seams in the middle of any room, since they are individual tiles that can be cut to fit any space or angle, making them versatile in rooms with many turns and complex layouts.

Carpet tiles can be a colorful and creative way to add a touch of color and style to any room. You can even mix and match carpet tile colors.

Flowers Flooring is a family owned and operated flooring sales and installation provider serving both the Charlotte and Western, NC areas. Flowers Flooring specializes in all flooring type including carpet, laminate, hardwood, tile, tile backsplash, tile showers, vinyl plank and sand & finish.

It’s a new year and that means out with the old and in with the new. The 2017 flooring trends are leaning towards brighter, bolder colors that add style and functionality to any room. Whether your currently considering tile, carpet, hardwood, vinyl plank or laminate, neutral colors are fading out and more vibrant colors that transform a room from drab into fab are making a comeback. Here’s what to expect in flooring trends in 2017:

Tile

While the wood-look tile is not a “new” trend by any means, it is certainly building momentum in regards to popularity and it is quickly becoming a whole house staple, which means it’s no longer being installed in just kitchens and bathrooms, but bedrooms, living rooms and more.

This trend is here to stay which is why Flowers Flooring recently added another line of wood-plank tile to our tile selection.

Vinyl Plank

Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP) is upping the ante on realistic wood looks and is becoming a very popular choice among homeowners with high-traffic areas or children and pets. LVP is extremely durable and is the perfect choice for water areas such as bathrooms and laundry rooms, as this flooring is waterproof and virtually indestructible. LVP flooring is available in many styles that mimic current wood and tile flooring trends.

Flowers Flooring offers a wide array of LVP, including Shaw’s Floorte collection.

Solid and Engineered Wood Flooring

Even with the influx of wood-look flooring options, wood flooring is a classic choice and there will always be a market for wood flooring. The 2017 wood flooring color trends are gray, blonde and dark. Neutral wood flooring is out for 2017. Instead homeowners are looking for bold looks that make their home stand out above the rest. Standard 2.25 inch hardwood is becoming less popular and wider, more rustic looks are in. These include hand-scraped and wire brushed wood planks.

Carpet

With numerous textures, patterns, and colors available, carpet is emerging as a focal point in interior designs. No, neutral carpet has not disappeared completely, but today’s carpet choices are bolder and brighter. Berber carpet is still a popular choice, but unlike plain berber that was popular in the 1990s, today’s versions have more texture and pattern. Variations in height and sculpted effects also offer a bolder look. Even more traditional carpets now offer more visual interest with more extreme differences in pile cut and thicker, deeper loop textures.

Laminate

Laminate flooring has come a long way in the past few years. There are now laminate floors on the market that are waterproof. Yes, waterproof laminate. Flowers Flooring anticipates sales of this laminate to explode in 2017, as more homeowners seek a durable and economical flooring choice.

Did you know that carpet could contain 100 times more allergens than hard surface floors? (Source: e-healthy homes). If you suffer from allergies like one in five people in the U.S., you may want to think twice about replacing your old carpet with new carpet. Carpeting is a reservoir for dust mites, pet dander, mold spores and other allergy causing substances that lurk within the fibers.

To avoid carpet allergies, consider replacing carpeting with hard surface flooring such as luxury vinyl, hardwood or laminate. Hard surface flooring doesn’t harbor dust mites or other allergens and is much simpler to clean. This type of flooring is a smart choice that can improve the quality of your home environment by eliminating carpet allergies. This is especially true in areas of the home that you spend a lot of time in such as the bedroom.

Both solid hardwood and engineered hardwood are beautiful and long lasting. Hardwood floors come in a wide variety of types, textures and colors, but unlike carpet, hardwood does not contribute to carpet allergies.  For homeowners looking to spend less, laminate flooring is a great choice. Like hardwood floors, laminate floors offer an amazing selection of designs with the look and texture of real wood and stone at a fraction of the cost. As an added benefit, laminate floors are extremely durable and stand up to the wear and tear of pets and kids, while resisting the buildup of allergens.

Luxury vinyl is another alternative to carpet that is giving hardwood and laminate flooring a run for the money.  According to the World Floor Covering Association, luxury vinyl is one of the fastest growing trends in the flooring industry. This is a result of extraordinary photo technology that mimics wood or tile so closely that you have to look twice to see that it’s vinyl.

Shaw’s high performance carpet line Life Happens with LifeGuard moisture barrier backing is winning rave reviews from homeowners. It’s the first carpet of its kind to hit the market that actually stands up to life’s messes day in and day out, and can truly handle everyday spills and odors.

Life Happens carpet by Shaw is the first residential carpet innovation of its kind. LifeGuard is a revolutionary protection system that covers the entire product, from face fiber to backing. Carpets featuring LifeGuard are treated with Shaw’s R2X Stain and Soil resistance protection, the standard of excellence in the industry, while a thermoplastic backing provides a waterproof barrier that prevents liquids from soaking into the carpet padding and subfloor. Yes, WATERPROOF backing!

Waterproof Carpet Backing

One of the biggest threats to any floor covering is excessive moisture. Liquid spills, and pet accidents can be an everyday occurrence, and some spills can go unnoticed, especially on carpet, soaking through to the backing, padding, and even the subfloor. Certain liquids, such as pet urine, can cause unpleasant odors and are extremely difficult to remove if not promptly cleaned. Conventional carpet backings can also be damaged when exposed to prolonged moisture and caustic spills.

While some new carpet products promise protection against pet accidents, they must be used with a pad that services as a moisture barrier. Liquids still soak through the carpet backing and spread, leaving stains and potential odors. However, LifeGuard’s patented backing system keeps these liquids from seeping into the backing, thus allowing easier cleanup and protection against odor-causing spills and pet accidents.

Odor Reduction

Carpets featuring LifeGuard and R2X combat household odors. Smells such as cigarette smoke and odors from pet urine stains, once removed, are quickly and effectively dissipated. LifeGuard styles dissipate the odors 6 times faster than many competitive carpets, eliminating odors in 30 minutes or less.

Appearance Retention

LifeGuard carpets with Anso CrushResister High Performance Nylon are among the most durable luxury style available. They are resistant to fuzzing 4 times longer than comparable products, tufts are 5 times stronger to resist pulling out, loops are 2 times better at preventing edge ravel, and the carpet backing is 10 times less likely to suffer delamination.

With so many flooring choices and so little time to research what looks good in your home, feels good under foot and is durable, deciding on the right floor can be difficult to say the least. Flowers Flooring has helped sort it out with this handy dandy do’s and don’ts flooring list.

Style

DO: When it comes to style, first consider your home’s layout. If you have an open floor plan use the same flooring throughout the space to create a clean, continuous appearance.

DON’T: Forget about your home’s architectural integrity. Flooring that works in a classic home will not work well in a contemporary home. While you can make the flooring in your home a reflection of your personal style, keep the architectural integrity of the home. Hardwood floors are a great option and go well with the architectural integrity of virtually any home.

Durability

DO: Be sure to keep your local climate in mind. Areas of the country where damp and humid weather are common can shorten a floor’s lifespan causing major damage that will lead to replacement. Hardwood floors can warp and laminate can expand and contract.

DON’T: Underestimate wear and tear on new flooring. Depending on where you’re planning to install new floors, heavy foot traffic on plush carpet or water on hardwood or laminate floors can do severe damage. Tile or luxury vinyl tile are great choices for wet areas such as laundry rooms, bathrooms and kitchens.

Comfort

DO: Consider carpet. Carpet is a great choice for maximizing comfort, and it can be much more affordable than other flooring types. New fiber technologies have made carpet more durable and stain resistant. Be sure to work with a flooring professional that will help you select the carpet that is right for your home and lifestyle. If you have pets or kids, a dense carpet with a short pile height is best. A plush carpet with a long pile height would be a poor choice.

DON’T: Eliminate carpet because you have allergies. Recent studies suggest that carpet doesn’t cause allergies or make asthma worse. Carpet traps particles like dust and dander, thus acting like a filter and bringing relief to some people, according to a recent Spanish study. Frequent vacuuming, using a doormat to cut down on the amount of dirt that enters your home, and a yearly deep cleaning can keep your carpet in great shape for years to come while keeping allergies at bay.

Whether your embarking on a major remodeling project or simply updating a room in your home, changing your flooring is a simple way to make a dramatic difference. There are so many flooring choices available to choose from including tile, laminate, hardwood and carpeting.

Tile

Ceramic tile is the most durable of all tile materials. When installed properly, both ceramic and natural stone can last the lifetime of a house.  The durability combined with the natural beauty of stone and the vast array of tile and natural stone types, colors, patterns and textures make tile and stone the materials of choice where both quality and character are important in new floors.

Laminate Flooring

Laminate floors have come a long way. Once considered a substitute for hardwood or tile, laminate is now considered a legitimate medium in and of itself. The durability of laminate is often what initially interests most consumers.  In addition, laminate is easy to install. Unlike conventional solid wood flooring, it’s prefinished and can be glued down or applied over a thin foam pad on the subfloor.

Flowers Flooring has a great laminate flooring selection to choose from. Feather Step laminate is a 12 mm laminate that offers durability at a fabulous price. This collection adds warmth and a touch of class to any room. Feather Step is hypoallergenic laminate floor and it has an outstanding AC4 rating, which assures you that you will have a durable floor that will work fantastic in residential as well as commercial spaces.

Hardwood Floors

There’s nothing more durable and resistant to damage from impact than solid hardwood floors. The most popular hardwoods include oak, maple and ash. Other popular choices that are a bit more expensive are walnut, teak and cherry. A key benefit of hardwood flooring is that you can customize it with pieces arranged in a special design, or stain a contrasting color to reflect a special theme or design. Special inlay elements can turn an already striking hardwood floor into a distinctive work of art.

Carpeting

There are literally thousands of carpets to select from and the choices can be overwhelming. Don’t make the mistake of choosing a carpet solely based on color. Be sure to take into consideration the carpet’s fibers, tufts and construction, as well as your lifestyle.

Plush or Cut-Pile carpet has loops trimmed off so that the yarn ends poke up. Saxony plush, one of the most popular varieties, has short tufts that are densely packed. Plush carpet does not tend to wear as well in high-traffic areas as Berber carpet.  Berber is a high-level loop carpet that creates a nubby texture and has complete yarn loops that stand upright. Berber carpet holds up extremely well in high-traffic areas and is a good choice for families with pets and children.

You will also want to choose the carpet fiber that best fits your needs. Nylon outperforms all other fibers in durability, resilience and maintenance. It is a good choice if you want your carpet to last a decade or longer, for high-traffic areas and in homes with kids and pets.

New flooring – carpet, tile, laminate or hardwood is a simple way to make a lasting and dramatic change in the look and feel of any room in your home.  Call a flooring professional in your area today to obtain an estimate for new floors. Shopping for carpet in your home is a lot like shopping for a car. They are both going to hit your wallet and all the different styles, colors and brands can make your head spin. Let’s not forget the joy of dealing with high-pressure salespeople that both experiences promise.

Flooring is one of the largest investments you’ll make in your home. By doing some basic homework, comparison shopping and working with a reputable retailer and installation team, you’ll find carpet that fits your specific needs and gives you the confidence of getting a quality product for a good price.

This article will provide you with a basic background in carpet styles and quality and discuss the primary things to think about when you’re shopping for new carpet in your home. The article provides tips on what to look for, as well as what to avoid. The focus of the article is on synthetic fibers. While natural fibers like wool are absolutely beautiful in the home, they are out of most peoples price range.

Carpet Fibers

The majority of carpet produced in the United States contains one of seven pile fibers: nylon, polypropylene (olefin), acrylic, polyester, triexta, wool, or cotton. Each fiber has strengths and weaknesses that will help determine which carpet fiber is best for you.

Nylon

Nylon outperforms all other fibers in durability, resilience and easy maintenance. Nylon is a good choice if you want your carpet to last a decade or longer, for high-traffic areas, and in homes with children and pets. The strongest and softest type of nylon is 6.6, which is the most expensive.

Triexta

Triexta is a newly classified fiber derived partly from corn sugar. It has excellent, permanent anti-stain properties. It also has good resilience, but it’s to soon to tell whether it will match the durability of nylon in high-traffic areas. Due to triexta’s superior stain resistance, this is a good choice if you have young kids or pets.

Polyester

Also called PET, polyester is stain resistant, very soft and luxurious underfoot, and is available in vibrant colors. The down side of polyester is it’s harder to clean, tend to shed and it isn’t as durable as nylon. Polyester is best used in low-traffic areas such as bedrooms and in households without children or pets.

Polypropylene (Olefin)

Olefin is an attractive, inexpensive fiber that’s strong and resists fading. However, it’s not as resilient as nylon. Olefin is most often made into looped Berber with a nubby weave that conceals dirt. It has good stain, static and mildew resistance. Olefin carpeting is most often selected for high-traffic areas such as family rooms and play areas.

BCF or Staple Fibers

Carpet fibers can be either Bulked Continuous Filament (BCF) or staple. Staple fibers shed more than BCF fibers. This does not affect the long-term quality of the carpet, but it does mean you’ll have to vacuum more often until the initial shedding stops, which can take up to a year. This can also be an issue for allergy sufferers.

Carpet Density

Prior to purchasing carpet for your home check the quality. Determining the carpet density will help determine the quality of the carpet. Low-density carpet is low quality and will crush more easily. The higher the density, the better the quality. Density is determined by the thickness of the fibers and how tightly packed they are. The thicker and heavier they are, the better quality the carpet and less susceptible to crushing.

Face Weight

Face weight is the number of ounces of fiber per square yard. The range is generally from 20 to 80, and the higher the number, the heavier and more resilient the carpet. Look for a carpet with at least a 34 to 40 ounce face weight.

Tuft Twist

Tuft twist is the number of times the tufts are twisted together in a 1-inch length. The higher the number, the more durable the carpet. Look for a tuft twist of 5 or higher.

Warranty

Look for carpet that has at least a 10-year “texture retention” warranty. This covers how well the fibers return to their original shape after being walked on.

Proper Installation

Many carpet problems stem from poor installation. Bad seaming, thin carpet cushion (padding), and inadequate stretching can make a carpet look terrible within a few short years. Flowers Flooring has expert, skilled carpet installers who take pride in each and every carpet they install.

Prior to installation, Flowers Flooring will send a flooring expert to your home free of charge to measure your carpet job. Our expert will tell you exactly how much carpet and pad to order. Once you have your estimate it’s time to pick out your carpet at the Flowers Flooring showroom, located in Cornelius, NC. The carpet will be delivered to your home on installation day.
